Every spring we head over to Nobscot Scout Reservation for our annual Survival Weekend Outing. Survival Weekend is an all-troop activity where the older scouts build shelters with basic materials like tarps, rope, and of course, duct tape! In addition, the teams unofficially compete for “best meal honors” while some just the opportunity to enjoy a bowl of Ramen and some Pop-Tarts.
As customary with our troop, this is the first outing where we welcome our newest members to the troop. This year we welcomed 22 new scouts to and had a great weekend in the woods. The day started with a day hike through the Reservation and ended with campfire meals. Our new scouts did not build shelters, but were invited to help the older scouts in building theirs. Troop 63 Scouts shared ideas with the younger scouts, so they will be ready to build their own shelter at next year’s outing. New scouts also have the opportunity to earn their Fireman chit (to properly use an axe, light and maintain campfires) and their tot’n chip (proper use of knives at outings).
