Ice Climbing in New Hampshire 2014
Ice Climbing this year was different from most years. First, it was different from last year because we did not sleep on a set back ski resort lodge floor, but we slept on a clean floor of a hotel convention room. Yes - we had sleeping pads for both. Second, it was 45° day of. We woke up and ate breakfast excited for the day. Outside, it was not as happy. 35 degrees and rainy. We did not end up going to Frankenstein Cliff, like we usually do, but we went to a smaller place because it was so warm that there would be danger of large (refrigerator sized) icicles falling.
We put on the boots and cramp-ons that we had sized the night before, and started the trek to the waterfall. We arrived and started the climbing. About 1/2 an hour in, everybody’s gloves were completely soaked along with their coats. About 3 hours in, everybody eating lunch and squeezing out the water of their gloves, and then putting on their backup pair. Everybody had a great time, despite the weather. Eventually, we all picked up our stuff and trekked back to our group’s cars. In the end, this was a great outing.
